Leadership South Carolina to honor three notables

COLUMBIA - Three outstanding South Carolinians known for their work improving the lives of others will be honored during Leadership South Carolina's Legacy of Leaders event on Monday, November 26th at Embassy Suites in Greenville, SC. The Third Annual Dick & Tunky Riley Legacy of Leaders event will honor Hayne Hipp, founder of Liberty Fellows, Senator Lindsey Graham, R-SC, and Deb Sofield, an internationally recognized communication coach. They will be recognized for their contributions to our state, the southern region, the nation, and the world. Both Hipp and Sofield are graduates of Leadership South Carolina, while Sen. Graham has been an ardent supporter.

Hayne Hipp  -  The Leader of Distinction, Leadership SC Class of 1981
Hipp is founder of the Liberty Fellowship, a highly successful program of seminars, service projects and Forums conducted in partnership with the Aspen Institute and Wofford College. He is a private investor and former CEO of the Liberty Corporation, an insurance and broadcasting holding company in Greenville, SC. He is a Trustee of the Aspen Institute and The Belle W. Baruch Foundation. He is a former trustee of the Palmetto Business Forum, Greenville County School District, the National Urban League, Washington and Lee University, and the South Carolina Research Authority. He is also former director of SCANA Corporation, Dan River Inc., and Wachovia Corporation. A graduate of Washington and Lee, he earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton Graduate School of Business and completed additional studies at Harvard University.

Deb Sofield - The Alumnus of the Year, Leadership SC Class of 2001
Sofield is an international and national communications trainer for speaking, presentation skills and message development. Her training has been heralded for her ability to motivate and inspire others to seek public office, prepare for public speaking, and mentor minorities. She was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, named Communicator of the Year by the Association for Women in Communications. She was awarded the Strom Thurmond Excellence in Public Service and an ATHENA AWARD by the Greenville Chamber. She is a visiting professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, on the faculty of the Woman's Campaign School at Yale University, Loyola University, University of SC, Clemson's Strom Thurmond Institute, and Furman University's Lifelong Learning. She is chairman for the Commission of Public Works for Greenville's water system and a former member of Greenville City Council.

Senator Lindsey Graham - Walking The Path of Leadership Award
Sen. Graham is serving his second term as South Carolina's senior senator, earning a reputation as a conservative leader willing to tackle the toughest issues facing our nation. He was elected in 2002 and reelected in 2008 garnering over one million votes, making him the largest vote-getter in the state's history. He serves on the most influential committees, including Appropriations, Armed Services, Budget, and Judiciary. In 1994, he was elected to the US House of Representatives. Prior to this election, he compiled a distinguished record in the U.S. Air Force serving as an Air Force lawyer. He entered the SC Air National Guard, and later served state-side as a Staff Judge Advocate. He continues to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, as a colonel assigned to the Air Force JAG School.
